Frequently asked questions

Can Los Angeles tutors help with the CAASPP state tests?

Yes. California students take the CAASPP Smarter Balanced tests in English language arts and math in grades 3–8 and 11, plus the California Science Test in grades 5 and 8 and once in high school. Filter by Math or Reading to find tutors who work on these skills. Ask whether a tutor follows your district's curriculum (LAUSD, Santa Monica-Malibu, Pasadena, Glendale and so on).

Does my student need SAT or ACT prep to apply to UC schools?

Not for UC admission. The University of California is test-free and doesn't use SAT or ACT scores in admission or scholarship decisions, and the CSU system no longer uses them for admission either. Many private and out-of-state colleges still accept or require scores, and the PSAT is used for National Merit, so SAT/ACT prep is still common for students applying beyond the UC and CSU systems.

How do private school admissions tests work in Los Angeles?

Most Los Angeles independent schools use the ISEE for entry into grades 5–12, and many Catholic high schools use the HSPT. Some boarding schools accept the SSAT. Families usually apply in the fall for the next school year, and testing runs from fall into winter. Admission is very competitive, so many families start prep several months ahead. Several providers listed here specialize in ISEE and admissions guidance.

Should I choose in-home, online or center-based tutoring in LA?

Traffic makes this a real consideration. Many companies listed here send tutors to homes on the Westside, in the Valley and around Pasadena, which saves a cross-town drive. Centers along Ventura Boulevard, Hawthorne Boulevard and Huntington Drive suit families who pass them every day. Filter by In-home or Online to see providers who come to you.

Are there tutors for AP courses?

Yes. LA high schools offer a wide range of AP courses, and many providers here tutor AP subjects and prepare students for the May AP exams. Filter by AP Courses, and ask whether a tutor knows the specific AP course and exam format your student is taking.
